HW45 (AKA P-1) DISASSEMBLY
You will need pin punches, plastic hammer, 2mm and 2.5mm hex wrenches, a paper clip, rags, proper lubes.
1/ Remove grip panels.
2/ Loosen the 2mm hex screw that is located under the muzzle.
3/ Put a paper clip through the interrupter hole. This is the hole you will see in the pin that pops through into the lower cavity in the grip. You will only see the end of a set screw and this pin sticking into the lower grip cavity. Put the paper clip through the hole and leave it so the pin will not move upon disassembly/reassembly of pistol. The upper frame must be closed (latched shut) to get the pin into position and see the small hole.
4/ Open pistol by pulling hammer back. Don't cock it!
5/ Push out pin that secures muzzle end of upper frame. It is located below front sight.
6/ Invert pistol. Separate barrel group (upper frame) from action. The two cocking arms require some fiddling to release from their slots. They come out through the enlarged opening at the rear of slots.
7/ Loosen 2.5mm hex screw located under the front of pistol. It has a large head. This screw holds the front of cylinder in place.
8/ Drift out large pin located below rear sight on side of frame. There are three pins located there. The large one is the one we want to remove. It secures the rear of the cylinder.
9/ Pull back hammer to pop compression chamber up from it's seat.
10/ Remove 2.5mm screw which you previously loosened. It may help to tap screw head lightly to free the cylinder if cylinder is stuck. Use synthetic hammer.
11/ Remove compression cylinder from pistol.
12/ Some people use a small bar clamp to do this next step. Apply pressure to mainspring and drift out pin at end of cylinder (muzzle end). Decompress mainspring.
A small Quick-Grip adjustable bar clamp is what the Airgun Letter author uses for the P-1 (aka HW45) spring compressor. He used a Vise-Grip brand 12"(300mm) model (part 00512). One of the soft end pads on the clamp should be notched to receive the mainspring cylinder projection. A 5" piece of vinyl tubing (1-1.25"D) can be used as a
sleeve to slide along the mainspring as it decompresses to give added resistance to side pressure for safety reasons.
That's as far as my instructions go. If you want to remove the piston you need to be careful not to damage the seal on the inside edges of the cocking slots. If you plan on replacing the seal then you have no worry with removal.
When re-installing the piston it might be wise to use shims to get the piston seal passed the sharp cocking slots. Make sure there are no burrs on the inside of the slots (remove burrs). On similar situations I have used cut pieces of disposable aluminum pie plates to slide seals passed sharp edges.
Clean off the factory lubes from the cylinder, piston and mainspring. Over lubing the HW45 will slow it down. Don't use heavy spring tar or mainspring dampening compound if you want top velocity. Most tuners will apply a thin coat of
moly to the outer perimeter of the seal and a 1" band behind the seal and at the piston skirt. All pivot points should also be
moly coated as well as the ends of the cocking arms (feet). A very thin coat on the spring guide and spring is also done.
